Posted in Ashton Kutcher Replaces Charlie Sheen On Sitcom
Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen as the lead character on the hit CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men was perhaps the most talked about switch in 2011. The story was that Sheen was behaving erratically and not obeying the terms that were outlined in his contract. So Sheen was out and Kutcher was in.
Speculation about whether or not Kutcher would be simply written in as Charlie Harper, Sheen’s original character, was flying around. However, CBS made a smart move. The show’s ninth season kicked off with the character of Charlie Harper’s funeral and Ashton Kutcher’s entrance into the role of Walden Schmidt. Walden is an Internet billionaire who is going through a difficult divorce. There is quite a parallel between the characters of Walden and Charlie, both of which are rich and attractive men that seem to have soft spots for Jon Cryer’s character, Alan Harper, and his son Jake Harper, played by Angus T. Jones. Walden is also a childish man, as Charlie was irresponsible. He takes an interest in Charlie’s old house, buys it, allows Berta the housekeeper to live there, and eventually invites Alan and Jake to stay with him as well. Before you know it, Walden becomes a very Charlie-like character.
The change seems to be sitting well with viewers. The ratings are higher in the ninth season with Ashton Kutcher than they ever were during the first eight seasons starring Ashton Kutcher. In fact, in season eight the amount of viewers of Two and a Half Men were at an all time low of 12.73 million, but they jumped to an all time high of 18.61 million after Kutcher’s entrance onto the show. Sheen was funny, attractive, and a good actor. Kutcher steps it up to a higher level though, being funnier, more attractive, and an even better actor.
